Wedding venues in South Styria – inspiration & recommendations from a photographer
For many couples, South Styria is one of the most beautiful places in Austria to get married. Vineyards, rolling hills, wide light and a special calm create an atmosphere you can’t plan – it’s simply there.
As a wedding photographer I regularly cover weddings in this region. In this article I show you selected wedding venues in South Styria that have proven themselves not only organisationally but also photographically – including my personal favourites.
Why South Styria is so popular for weddings
Many couples consciously choose this region because it:
combines nature and elegance
offers ideal conditions for outdoor ceremonies
is less hectic than classic event venues
is perfect for relaxed, emotional weddings
South Styria is an ideal stage, especially for documentary wedding photography.
Weingut Holler – three venues, three moods
Weingut Holler is one of the most versatile wedding venues in South Styria. Particularly exciting is the option to choose between three different venues – depending on size, style and atmosphere.
Weingut Holler – a wedding with a view
The main venue impresses with:
outdoor ceremonies overlooking the vineyards
modern architecture with natural materials
short distances between all parts of the day
Photographically, very calm, timeless pictures with lots of landscape and light are created here.
Holler Stadl – relaxed & lively
The Holler Stadl is ideal for couples who:
are planning a relaxed, exuberant celebration
appreciate a rustic atmosphere without kitsch
focus on togetherness and partying
This venue develops a particularly beautiful, warm mood in the evening.
Holler Kellerstöckl – intimate & pared back
The Kellerstöckl is ideal for:
smaller weddings
very personal celebrations
couples looking for calm and seclusion
Here the closeness between people and surroundings takes centre stage – perfect for honest, emotional pictures.
Domäne Hirschmugl – my personal favourite
If I had to name one wedding venue in South Styria as my personal favourite, it would clearly be Domäne Hirschmugl.
Why I value this venue so much:
generous, open landscape
modern architecture that doesn’t dominate
exceptionally beautiful light throughout the day
perfect conditions for outdoor ceremonies
Domäne Hirschmugl leaves room – for emotions, encounters and real moments. That’s exactly what makes it so strong photographically.
More recommended wedding venues in South Styria
Besides the venues mentioned above, there are other places that have proven to be very atmospheric over the years:
Weinschloss Thaller – romance & elegance
Weinschloss Thaller combines historic castle architecture with modern wedding organisation:
fairy-tale ambience
generous indoor and outdoor areas
ideal for classic, elegant weddings
Weingut Georgiberg – calm & wide views
Weingut Georgiberg sits high up in the vineyards and offers:
impressive views
a very private atmosphere
ideal conditions for outdoor ceremonies
Photographically particularly strong thanks to clarity, landscape and light.
Kirchenwirt Hofer – warm & down-to-earth
Kirchenwirt Hofer is perfect for couples who:
appreciate family-style hospitality
want to celebrate traditionally, but not stiffly
are looking for real closeness to their guests
Very honest, emotional documentary pictures are created here.
Georgi Schloss – classic elegance in the countryside
Georgi Schloss combines:
historic substance
quiet park areas
versatile options
A very good choice for couples who want to combine classic architecture with nature.
What to look out for when choosing your wedding venue
From a photographic point of view, I recommend:
enough space for an outdoor ceremony & drinks reception
relaxed time slots without pressure
places to retreat to for couple portraits
natural surroundings instead of artificial staging
The venue shapes not only the course of the day – but also the entire visual language of your wedding.
Practical questions I ask when viewing a venue
Besides the looks, it’s worth considering a few practical points that later decide whether your day is relaxed or rushed:
Bad-weather alternative: Is there a covered area for the outdoor ceremony in case it rains? Especially in South Styria, with its open vineyard venues, this is a point I actively raise at every viewing.
Light at the time of your ceremony: A venue that looks dreamy at 3 pm can look completely different at 11 am in harsh backlight. Where possible, I look at venues at roughly the time of your planned ceremony.
Distances between parts of the day: Are the ceremony site, drinks reception area and party room close together, or do you need to allow for travel time? This directly affects how much buffer the schedule needs.
A retreat for couple portraits: A quiet area away from the guests that you have to yourselves for 20–30 minutes often makes a bigger photographic difference than the venue itself.
My conclusion
South Styria offers an exceptional variety of wedding venues – from modern to traditional, from intimate to grand.
What matters isn’t which venue is “the most beautiful”, but which one feels right for you.
I’m happy to support you with my experience – in choosing the venue as well as in planning a relaxed timeline.
